please help:

I basically was living at my address with my partner, my partners name was on the council tax bill, i added my name to the bill, (my surname is different to my partners) and the bill has my partners surname for me, basically the bill has mrs J Jones & mr H Jones, but my surname is Mr H Smith. What happened was that i lost my job, was completely broke, and i could not or did not know that i could claim benefits, as my partner was from abroad and i could not claim public funds to get her permanent residence, i managed to pay some of it, but then i lost my head and went into depression, the counil didnt respond for a while and then when they did i was getting letters from the bailifs asking for huge amounts, i didnt know what to do, so i phoned the council and said that they dont live here no more as i am the owner of the property, since then i managed to find a job and have been paying the council tax in my real name for the last 7 months as a single occupant, but we both live here, my partner is now permanent residence, and i have found out that as i am on a low income, i can claim working tax credit and get a discount on my council tax as joint partners, so i have applied for it, and they sent me the pack out and i have sent it back, now waiting to here from them.

what will happen will they do checks with the councill, will i get into trouble?

i dont want to come across as a tax doger or someone who doesnt pay their bills, but for me the recession has taken its toll, i moved into my new house last year, paid more than what i should have, had a riddiculous mortgage rate for last year and also now into negative equity and finally loosing my job, i dont want to sound sympathetic but just want to get back on track, i dont want to go on the doll and havent done so for the last 7 years! got to keep going!

what my question is that i want to sort the matter out, what do i say to the council, also i want to have both our names on the council tax bill and also put her name on & also the electrol register, but i dont want to get her or myself into trouble, the bill that was owed was for like about 8 months, moved in april 08 said moved out dec 08, but the fact that i told them she moved out, how do i sort it out, will there be a discount, as there was no income coming in at the time, only money borrowed from freinds, i am behind on other bills and mortgage payments too, i would really appreciate your help. Many thanks
